AUGUST NEWSLETTER | Today & Always: Cash Is Queen
Hi friends,
As true money nerds, we are *actually* excited to talk about cash flow this month. As we love to say: Cash is Queen! đ
As Georgia recently shared with Fortune, market uncertainty can create anxiety, so we aim to shift our focus to things we have more control over, like cash flow (more below).
Itâs also a great time to reflect on our manifestoâs reminder to prioritize connection, because âWe know our greatest wealth is our personal relationships.â

Investment insights
On the blog, our Investment Committee put recent stock and bond market performance into perspective, since our portfolios are constructed knowing that ups and downs will happen.
We also shared action items for making the most of down markets. Give it a read.
đ Feeling emotional about it all? This great NYT article digs into financial therapy as a much needed bridge between financial and emotional expertise. Here's to all great financial therapists out there!
Structuring Your Wealth Around Your Values: Cash Flow
We are deeply passionate about cash flow around here. A first step to creating more financial satisfaction is often understanding your day-to-day relationship with spending, saving, and what you value.
On Michael Kitcesâ podcast, Georgia gave a detailed breakdown of how we help our clients implement new cash flow structuresâincluding our multiple bucket approach. It seems wild, but *YES* 6 separate bank accounts can make budgeting waaaaay easier! Give it a listen here (start at the 40 minute mark).

modernist takes it outside
Georgia chatted with Charlotte Cowles for a recent New York Magazine's The Cut article on how to find a financial adviser.
Itâs a fantastic resource for anyone looking to understand where theyâre at in their financial journey and what kinds of support they might need!
Did you catch Georgia on the nightly news recently?!
KATU reporter Genevieve Reaume interviewed her about getting recession ready. A great takeaway: âWe prepare for fires and earthquakes, why not this?â
FUND YOUR HEROES
With midterm elections quickly approaching, weâre supporting the work of these grassroots orgs:
đł An easy and effective way (from home even!) to increase voter turnout is letter writing. Vote Forward provides tools, templates, and contact info so that itâs easy to reach out and encourage folks to join you in voting.
đł Next Up Oregon builds political power among young people across the state, with a focus on the restoration of voting rights. Check out their 2022 legislative priorities or support their work with a donation.
ART BREAK: PICAâs Time-Based Art Festival
PICAâs beloved Time-Based Art Festival is back next month with the yearâs most innovative performance art! This year adds NIGHT SCHOOL, a series of evening performances. Weâre especially excited to see our fave art queen Pepper Pepper in the lineup with Drag Animism and the Cyborg Sissy.
See you there?!
A SONG THAT IS REALLY ABOUT FINANCIAL PLANNING
We love music as a fuel for our work at Modernist. Any given day, we could be listening to Beyonceâs new album, Mulatu Astatke, Queen, or Kraftwerk. Itâs a toss up for our ultimate musical heroes, reallyâŚ
This month weâre sticking with the incredible Kraftwerk anthem for radical financial planners everywhere: Pocket Calculator. There are so many great live performances from 1981, but weâre going with this Italian TV show. Florian is playing a pocket-calculator-turned-tiny-synthesizer!
