OCTOBER NEWSLETTER | Spend Money, Time, and Hope on Progressive Change đ€
Hi friends,
Our 2024 calendar invites us to REFLECT in this season of shorter, cooler days.
To help us digest election stress, weâre focusing on art that inspires us, factors that have contributed to recent economic growth, and strategic giving here in the home stretch.
Take care of yourself and those around you,
Georgia + Team Modernist
investment insights
In our Q3 Market Commentary, we dig into why the Fed decided to lower interest rates, how monetary policy lag works, and the impact of the recent rate change. The good news: the economy (and markets) remained resilient this quarter!
We prepare and empower our clients to navigate all of lifeâs uncertaintiesâincluding a change in family structure. In Planning Through Divorce, we share considerations and ways planners can support this life transition.
Structure Your Wealth Around Your Values
Inflation has eased, recent interest rate cuts are reducing the cost of debt, yet eggs are still really expensive! When asked whatâs important to voters ahead of this yearâs election, the economy comes up time and time again.
We love Heather Cox Richardsonâs podcast, especially this recent review of Biden-Harris economic accomplishments from the American Rescue Plan keeping teachers employed and union workersâ pensions in place, to economic policy rooted in economic growth from the middle out and the bottom up (trickle downâs been debunked, yâall!)
FUND YOUR HEROES
We have a new friend crush at Modernist. Phīla is a national Black woman-led, values-driven, philanthropic advisory firm based in Seattle, WA.
They developed this Political Giving Workbook for Progressive Donors and built this awesome database of orgs to support, which notes their status as a 501c3, c4, or PAC.
Want an even simpler solution? Donate to Oath Vote and theyâll use data to drive your dollar to the most impactful races (without the spam).
Modernist Takes It Outside
Georgia and Farnoosh are at it again on a new episode of So Money!
With recent heartbreaking storms, they discuss climate change and financial preparedness.
Clean up often comes down to governmental solutions; very few of us can self-fund this scale of emergency. So what does that mean for you?
đ” Pay your taxes to fund systemic solutions to systemic problems!
đ” Cash is queen: Build a strong emergency fund and keep adding to it monthly.
đ” Consider adding an extra insurance policy for floods or earthquakes, depending on the risks where you live.
Portland Business Journal recently listed Modernist #77 on their list of Largest Women-Owned Businesses in Oregon & S.W. Washington! đ€ Hereâs to women running the money!

A SONG THATâS REALLY ABOUT COMMUNITY
At Modernist, when we say progressive, we mean that weâre concerned about how our individual actions impact the community around us. That means we're interested in making sure the folks around us are doing alright and that we have open lines of communication with our neighbors.
Lucinda Williamsâ classic âAre you Alright?â reminds us that with tensions high and folks navigating both being human and climate devastation, letâs commit to building the communities of connection we want to live in.
Are you all right?
I wish you'd give me a little clue
Are you all right?
Is there something you want to say?
Are you all right?
Just tell me that you're OK
