OCTOBER NEWSLETTER | Our Advice: Make A Plan and Stick To It!
Hi friends,
As the news continues to confound, we’re reflecting on the value of having a plan to guide our actions.
With clients: We’re in the Financial Planning phase of our Seasons of Action so... together we’re updating their plans, considering upcoming life transitions, and making tax decisions before year-end arrives.
At Modernist: Lately, we've had the urge to anxiety-donate (ahem, looking at you, Texas!), so we're checking in with our Philanthropy Plan to help guide our giving.
In planning + values we trust,
Georgia + Team Modernist
P.S. Need help getting started? Our Resources + Referrals Directory is full of great starting points like this Financial Well-Being workshop from friend of the firm, Manisha Thakor at MoneyZen!
fund your heroes: MODERNIST X OCF
Thanks to everyone who joined our event with Oregon Community Foundation! We had a great time digging into their research to better understand the Opportunity Gap for kids, focused on Oregon but applicable to most areas of the country.
Modernist loves to give away our knowledge, so we’re excited to provide yet another resource to help focus your generosity and dig into your money story.
We recorded the event and put it on the blog so you can attend at your leisure!
We also designed guided journaling exercises to help you better understand your own experience with opportunity, contextualize the data based on your neighborhoods, and discovering what taking action could look like for you.
MODERNIST TAKES IT OUTSIDE
Our friend Ashley Feinstein Gerstley of The Fiscal Femme interviewed Georgia for the new personal finance book she’s writing...stay tuned for more on that!
In the meantime, she included a sneak peek of some of Georgia's advice in a recent edition of her fab newsletter Money Musings.
They discussed the power of shopping locally while building connection with local workers.
A key takeaway: When we spend $100 at a local business, $68 of that stays in our local communities, versus $43 when we shop at a chain.
A reminder that we can vote with our dollars each and every day. 💪🏼
INVESTMENT INSIGHTS
We're thrilled to see our badass friend and local legend, Rukaiyah Adams and the Meyer team's work uplifted by the Portland Business Journal!
We’re so grateful they're leading the way nationally for how we could invest in our collective future by advocating for investments for the “1000-year community”.
They're advocating a "positive covenant strategy” focused on companies creating positive change versus a simple “negative covenant strategy” where investors avoid things like casinos or gun companies.
“If you are a long-term investor, then you don’t invest to avoid things, you invest to solve things.”
ART BREAK: MITCHELL S. JACKSON
OH is one of our local heroes, leading courageous conversations all around the state (among many other inspiring endeavors).
American Dreams, American Myths, American Hopes is the theme of Oregon Humanities’ annual Consider This series. The season kicks off October 13th with Oregon writer Mitchell S. Jackson, author of Survival Math and The Residue Years.
RSVP and tune in here for a live virtual conversation on self-determination, family, and redemption with Jackson and Oregon Humanities Executive Director Adam Davis.
A Song That is REALLY About being kind to yourself
It’s been a long [insert period of time that makes sense to you], right? Georgia recently put this on the office turntable as a reminder to be easy on yourself, and treat yourself with the kindness of a friend.
You’re okay, dear. There’s nothing to feel inferior about. You can do it. / And our time is now, we can do anything you really believe in. / I know it. / Our time is now, here in the morning of our lives. / Our time is right now, you can do anything you set your heart on.
