TEAM MODERNIST ON Q2 Market News, Money Stories, Invitation to Our Volunteer Day, and Tom Petty

Hi Friends,

This month we’re reviewing Q2 market performance, inviting you to join us for an afternoon of food packing at the Oregon Food Bank, and sharing takeaways from our latest Money Stories gathering. We hope you enjoy! -- Georgia and Team Modernist

Investment insights on Q2 performance & trade news

Despite robust earnings for U.S. companies during the first-quarter earnings season — the S&P 500 Index generated a massive 24.8% increase in earnings on a year-over-year basis — the escalating trade posturing between the U.S. and its major trading partners is making investors nervous.

Check out our latest Investment Insights video above for our take on what this means for your  portfolio!

Modernist Money Stories!

At Modernist, we infuse our values into every aspect of our work; because our values are action verbs we are able to concretely live out our beliefs. For last month’s Modernist Money Stories gathering, we invited our guests to identify their actionable values, and then apply them to their own lives (specifically, their financial lives).

We organized the discussion around the question:
“How Can We Enjoy Our Money and Honor Our Values?

Speaking of living our values, Modernist is hosting a volunteer day for our team and friends at the Oregon Food Bank on Saturday, September 8th from 1 PM to 3:30 PM

We would love to have you join us in packing food for distribution! Click here to RSVP.

Some facts on why the Oregon Food Bank works to feed the human spirit in Oregon:

  • The rate of food insecurity (being without access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food) in Oregon is 14.6%.
  • About 552,900 Oregonians are food insecure, of those 194,070 are children.
  • About 72% of the people who receive food have incomes below the federal poverty level.
  • Of households utilizing food pantries, about 80% of them are able to meet their food needs for the month with the help of a pantry.

Songs that are really about values

In “I won’t back down,” Tom Petty makes a commitment to stand by what’s important to him. As we all work towards living our values every day, this song serves as a reminder and really just a solid pep-talk: No, I’ll stand my ground / Won’t be turned around / And I’ll keep this world from dragging me down / Gonna stand my ground / And I won’t back down

Modernist in the news

Last month, Georgia was featured in New York magazine's The Cut, chiming in on the importance of self-awareness in developing a healthy relationship with money.
